Founder's Day 2023, Albertus Magnus College

Exploring the Play of Light, Water and Peacemaking

How can photography express the theme of Founder's Day 2023, "Peace by Piece"? In this exhibit—featuring selected works by students in my Summer 2023 class, Introduction to Photography—the visual imageries of water and light reveal tranquility and hope. Water, with its cleansing and nurturing qualities, reflects the depths of peace and the flow of peacemaking. Light, of course, signifies truth, and the illumination that peacemakers bring, dispelling darkness and inspiring change.

As photographers explore light and water from the point of view of artistic expression, they discover that these mundane elements have the potential to become potent symbols of serenity and change. The camera's lens captures subtleties and nuances, transforming everyday scenes into profound narratives. Through this creative process, students not only refine their technical skills but also develop a deeper understanding of the role of art in conveying complex ideas.

The exploration of light and water as symbols of peace challenges students to think critically about the world around them. And the process reveals the power of photography as a medium. Photography is not just about taking pictures but also about communicating emotions, stories, and messages that transcend language barriers. In this journey of artistic self-discovery, students discover the capacity of art to inspire, provoke thought, and foster a sense of unity in our diverse world.
