Film Developing Instructions for Black and White Film
Ilford HP5+ film

October, 2023

FILM DEVELOPER

7 minutes at 70 degrees

Each roll of film needs 10 oz of working solution. To make this use 1 oz of Arista Film Developer and 9 oz. of water @ 70 degrees

Use 20 oz for a plastic (2 reel) tank when developing 2 rolls

Begin timing. Pour developer into the tank. To dislodge air bubbles, tap the tank lightly on the counter to release air bubbles. Agitate 5 seconds every half minute after the initial first 60 seconds of agitation. Rap once firmly against the bottom of the sink immediately after the initial 60 seconds of agitation. Continue to agitate film every 30 seconds for the remainder of the time. When development time is completed, pour developer down the drain. Time: varies with film and temperature (and brand developer) Ilford Hp5 and Arista film develope = 7 min.

STOP BATH

15 seconds
Measure 20 oz for a plastic (2 reel) tank. 10 oz for 1 roll.
Agitation: Constant.
Reuse - pour Stop back into the same container when finished.

FIX

4 minutes

Agitation: 5 seconds every half minute after the initial first 60 seconds of agitation.
Reuse - pour Fixer back into the same container when finished

If mixing new fixer use 2 oz of concentrate and 8 oz water for each roll of film.

ELIMINATOR/FIXER REMOVER

1 minute

Agitate 5 seconds every half minute after the initial 30 seconds of agitation. Discard after use.
Reuse - pour Eliminator back into the same container when finished

WATER WASH

3 minutes

.

PHOTOFLO/WETTING AGENT

1 minute
Mix a few drops of photo flo for 10 oz water.

HANG TO DRY

CLEAN UP

Rinse all reels and tanks. Shake off excess water, dry and return to storage places.

Note

Temperature. Should remain consistent throughout the process including the wash. 68 is ideal, but adjust the time for temperatures other than 68 degrees, see chart *.

Timing. Should begin when the tank is completely filled with solution. Begin pouring out each solution about 10 seconds before the time is over.

Agitation.
Should begin immediately after the tank is filled. Gently rotate the tank twice, invert it twice, and rotate it again - following this sequence for the entire agitation. Do not over agitate.

Be consistent!!!
